There is no question on the important role that drains play in the well-being of your home. The sad thing is, there are quite a number of different things that can go wrong and this could be as a result of different occurrences including pipe breakdowns, drain blockages and one that you might not see every day a rat infestation.

If your drains are not in the best working condition, all that a rat needs to get access to your home is a small hole in your drains. They will squeeze into the hole and into their safe passage into your home. Needless to mention, this could be the first of many pilgrimages into your home and it would get even worse if one of the rats died in the pipes. It sounds serious (and it is!) and you should get the problem looked into very quickly.

Confirm your fears

First you need to ensure that you do in fact have a rat infestation in your hands. While the rats themselves might be elusive creatures that will try to stay away from your glare as much as possible, there are very simple signs that you can use to determine the presence of the rats.

In case of an infestation, you will notice pieces of chewed paper, electric cables with bite marks, wood and plastic chippings and even food packaging that has been chewed as well. With such signs, you have conclusive evidence that you do have a rat infestation in your home.

Another great sign of rat infestation is rat droppings. This might also be accompanied by a characteristic urine smell that can be pungent at times and very repulsive. Rat droppings are typically dark in colour and resemble tiny pellets. You will usually find it around the areas of feeding.

Other signs that you might have a rat infestation include noticing the nesting areas, scratching and scrabbling sounds under the falls or in the walls and have holes gnawed through the walls.

It is important to note that as the infestation becomes more severe, so will the damage which calls for immediate action.

What to do

Once you have ascertained the infestation, the first thing to do is get in touch with a qualified pet control expert who has the capacity to get rid of the problem quickly and effectively. Once that has been done, you will need to get in touch with a plumbing expert to conduct a CCTV survey to identify the faulty part of the drainage.

With our services at Genesis Drainage, we will be able to offer you a reliable CCTV drainage survey with our cutting edge equipment and help you prevent the rodents from making it back into your home again. We also offer drainage repairs once the problem has been identified to make sure that you have the best possible drainage system that can withstand the test of time and weather.

Preventative measures

Once the initial problem has been taken care of, you will need to make sure that it does not happen again. You need to take some preventative measures that will ensure the problem does not occur again. First, you need to fit a protective guard on your external drainage openings to ensure that rats are not able to squeeze into such places and get into your drainage systems.

You should also try and avoid feeding your pets outdoors. The left overs and food dropping are a great attraction for rats will instantly lure them closer to your home.

Rats are a significant problem to any home and avoiding them is the best approach. With our drainage services, we can help to avoid the onset of an infestation. If you’re already a victim, you need to get in touch with a pest control expert after which we can come in and identified if your drainages are the problem and if they are, we can fix that for you and avoid similar occurrences in the future.
